When e-scooters first appeared in the UK two decades ago, very few people took them seriously. They were toys or jokes, ridden around city streets for a laugh. It has taken many years, technological advancements and the climate crisis to change attitudes. Today there is not only an appetite but a real hunger for fast, efficient, emission-free modes of transport. How does an e-scooter work?

They use a small electric motor which is easy to charge from the mains. As soon as you start moving on your scooter the motor kicks in and you can control the speed using the throttle. The two main types of motor are the front hub motor, which is used in the very popular Xiaomi 365 for example, and the rear hub version which effectively pushes you forwards but means most of the weight is concentrated at the back of the machine. The distance you can cover depends on the model and the battery size, but you could be looking at anything from 7 to 28 miles before you need to recharge. Most e-scooters have both foot and hand brakes and many of them are designed to fold down for easy storage.
