If you're one of the growing number of people that are considering buying an electric scooter, your priorities are likely to be the look and style, the speeds you can go and the distances you can cover on one charge. But although these are your main considerations, another crucial aspect you should consider is the tyres.
An electric scooter is no different from a car or a motorbike in its reliance on high-performing, well-maintained tyres. Your ride will only be as enjoyable and safe as the tyres you travel on. But there's one big difference that sets electric scooters apart: the choice between pneumatic tyres and solid tyres.
The Two Types of Electric Scooter Tyres
Pneumatic tyres are familiar to all of us, they are integral parts of everything from bicycles to cars and trucks. They are made of rubber and filled with air (or nitrogen) which acts as a cushion between the road and rider. Some pneumatic tyres are actually tubeless, but an electric scooter inner tube is the same in principle as in any other form of pneumatic tyre. This kind of tyre absorbs shock very effectively and holds the road well, however they can be easily punctured. Where a car tyre may be able to run on a puncture long enough to get to a garage, electric scooter tyres are much smaller and don't give you that leeway.
Some scooter riders opt for the solid version. Electric scooter solid tyres are made entirely of hard rubber or have a hard rubber outer and a foam or honeycomb inner. They are heavier and don't cushion so well which means the ride won't be as comfortable as on an inner tube electric scooter. They also tend to offer less traction. The advantage is that they are very resistant to punctures. Although they will wear down over time, you probably won't need to replace them for years.
